max and jake’s big race 2010

This is the second year I’ve been at our friends’ charity race. This year I had a more official role as photographer/videographer. They have done an amazing job raising money for Rady Children’s Hospital.

Even more amazing was that due to a police incident which happened over night, they had to move the entire race to a different location the morning of the race! I was amazed at how well they handled the unexpected move.

And for those of you from San Diego, yes that’s Derek Togerson from NBC San Diego 7/39 who emceed the event and did an incredible job.

You can find out all about the race on their website: www.maxandjakesbigrace.org

I expect to see all of you there for next year’s race!

high tide brunch

Since I didn’t have a wedding on Saturday, my family and I decided to go to the “High Tide Brunch” at the Marine Room in La Jolla. It was pouring rain, but the waves were big and pounding against the glass in their dining room. That was pretty impressive, but then all of a sudden a perfect rainbow appeared over the ocean. It was simply amazing! (The food was great too, BTW.)

The glass was dirty from all the waves, but the rainbow was spectacular

Amazing shot, Darin. It doesn’t look real. I bet the kids had a real treat.

tj + brian

TJ and Brian were one of the most easy going, relaxed couples I have worked with. If you didn’t know they were getting married that day, you would have thought they were just hanging out and enjoying themselves at the La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla. Even though it had been raining all day and their ceremony was supposed to be outside, they took it all in stride. Even the hotel wasn’t sure where to do the ceremony until just one hour before the ceremony was supposed to start. Luckily, the sun came out and they were able to have their ceremony outside as planned.

It was a great small wedding, just 18 of their closest family and friends, and of course the most important family member, their dog Tory. She was not only included in the ceremony, but in the portraits, the cake, and even on the guests’ gift bags!

Thanks to Susanne of Crown Weddings for another perfect event and Jennifer Cole Florals for the beautiful flowers.

And we can’t forget the incredibly cute cake with Tori as the cake topper from Sweet Cheeks Baking Co.

Here’s a few photos from their wedding:

    Darin,
Thank you for taking care of my son and daughter-in-law on their most important day of their life, judging from these few samples and your performance and attitude on that day, I am very sure we’re going to see wonderful works. I am not easily impressed, I was one of the most demanding art director at work, but I must say…you’ve impressed me and I can’t wait to see the rest of your beautiful photos.
    Thanks again!

Darin, thank you so much for everything. This sampling of photos is great. I’m still blown away by our wedding day! It far exceeded any expectations I had, and I was so relieved when the sun came out to play just in time for our pictures and ceremony. We appreciate you trekking all over the place with your gear for us, especially toughing it out on the slippery cove! We can’t thank you enough for the beautiful photos. Brian and I look forward to seeing the rest and the video when they’re done. Take care!

sofia’s first portraits

My sister and her partner just had another baby! But since they live in Northern California, and with my crazy schedule, I wasn’t able to be there when she was born. So, I finally just made time to fly up there for a day to visit and see the baby, and of course shoot some portraits.

Sofia cooperated beautifully. My sister was saying that she hadn’t ever been so awake before. I was amazed at how she had her eyes open the whole time.

We ended up shooting almost everything in one room. You can really do a lot with just a simple room and fortunately some great light from the huge windows.

Congratulations to Susan and Cristina!

my grandmother’s 99th birthday party

My wife and kids and I flew to Sacramento for my grandmother’s 99th birthday. Too bad we couldn’t stay longer. We flew in the morning of the party and left the next morning.

It was great to see everyone!

Of course I can’t go to such a big party without bringing all my camera gear…

kristi + jeff

A quick one hour civil ceremony at the San Diego County Building. Of course in San Diego, even a civil ceremony has a beautiful setting.

Kristi and Jeff flew out from the east coast to get merried at the county building since her grand parents got married here 40 years ago.
